Man killed in Dhaka ‘shootout’ identified as militant

Police claim the Ansarullah Bangla Team operative, killed during a ‘shootout’ in Dhaka, and had knowledge of all the recent killings of secular writers, bloggers and publisher. Senior Detective Branch officer of Bangladesh police Mashrukur Rahman Khaled says that 'Sharif' was an Ansarullah Bangla Team operative, who was one of those responsible for the murder of writer-blogger Avijit Roy. Avijit Roy, a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin, known for speaking out against religious extremism was hacked to death on 26 February 2015 night as he walked through Bangladesh's capital with his wife. Police said it had also identified Sharif as one of the masterminds in the murders of publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan, online activist Nazimuddin Samad and the killings of gay rights activist Xulhaz Mannan and his friend Mahbub Rabbi Tonoy.
