At least 50 die as ferry capsizes in Padma River, Bangladesh

More than 20 hours after the disaster occurred on the river Padma, the rescue operation has been called off by deputy Commissioner Rashida Ferdous, although local authorities will keep on searching with the help of divers and trawlers. So far, 69 bodies have been fished out of the river, 12 of them still to be identified, but there’s no possibility to verify the exact number of passengers who were on board. The double decker ferry has been dragged to the bank of the river, where families have been gathering to recognise the remains of their relatives, while the captain of the cargo vessel that caused the collision has been arrested, together with his two crew members.
